With our next makers market less than a week away, Saturday 6 July at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, we are excited to share with you some of the makers who will bring their finest handmade items to market.
Today we introduce Amanda Barks of Rock Covers Paper.
What inspired you to became a maker?
My uncle and his then girlfriend was my inspiration. When I was little they lived in London. My uncle is a random creative, and she was a fashion student at Central St. Martins. I thought they were so cool and opened my eyes to so much art and design out there.
What is it like owning your own business or like many, juggling multiple jobs?
Like most people, it keeps me on my toes, but man it’s awesome when someone gets my work and cracks a smile.
How are your products sustainable?
This is something I should shout about more often. I use recycled card/paper, I’m also a fan of the naked card and will only wrap my cards when purchased, and I use bio degradable cello wraps.
After a long day designing and making, what do you do to switch off and relax?
I do enjoy watching some Netflix. I’m very much a binge viewer.
Can you tell us what is it like juggling your passion whilst holding down a day job?
I’m quite lucky as my day job is a Graphic Designer in the snow industry – two of my passions right there. So yeah, I’m very lucky as it doesn’t feel like I’m juggling, I’m just being a creative.
What challenges have you faced?
My mental health has been the biggest challenge I have faced so far.
Can you impart a quote or words of wisdom to inspire?
You don’t know unless you try.

WHO IS THE LADY BEHIND THE ILLUSTRATIONS?
Hi. I am Victoria Tojeiro of VictoriaDraws.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR DESIGN PROCESS, OR WHERE YOU TAKE YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
Since I’ve been old enough to hold a pencil I’ve drawn. My infant sketchbooks are full of horses, unicorns, fish and even the odd princess, as well as scraps of stories inspired by my favourite books. I remember announcing to the family that when I grew up I wanted to “write stories and draw the pictures.” Bar the princesses and unicorns, my current sketchbooks aren’t too different, filled with sketches and stories of animals doing silly things.
My ambition remains the same, but having no formal art qualifications, I found myself floundering a couple of years ago and so started VictoriaDraws as a way to showcase my illustrations and to give me a sense of drive.
I’ve found the experience surprising, frustrating and totally exhilarating. I realise that I really enjoy creating artwork for people’s homes, and since starting the business, I have even been asked to design wedding invitations and create pet portraits; things I never would have seen myself doing a few years ago. My confidence has had a massive boost, and I find myself more energised and more determined than ever.
WHAT IS IT LIKE OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND JUGGLING LIFE?
I work full time as a primary school teacher so there is a lot of juggling that goes on in my life! During the week I tend to stick to creating content for social media and my blog, as well as sketching out new ideas on the commute. I save the real work for the weekends and holidays, where I can be mostly found in our box room either painting or frowning at photoshop. I paint everything by hand, and then clean things up on photoshop, which I’ve had to teach myself to do but I’m getting there!
THANK YOU, VICTORIA, FOR TELLING US ABOUT YOURSELF. CAN YOU IMPART WORDS OF WISDOM TO INSPIRE THOSE STARTING OUT?
One of my favourite quotes (which appears as a print and is the feature image on this post- I love it so much!) is by Maya Angelou, and I find it in equal parts inspiring and also a motto to live by; “Nothing will work unless you do.”
Who is Samantha Parker London?
Samantha Parker is a Surface Designer.
Can you explain your design process?
My design process is also a learning process, I find something that fascinates me and study it. I learn about the subjects habitat, diet and anatomy. I then draw them and paint them with Gouache. The Artwork is then manipulated into patterns.
What is it like owning your own business and juggling life?
I am a full-time, work-from home-mum. Sometimes I find it full-on trying to juggle everything, but the rewards of looking after my son and doing what I love everyday outweighs everything else. I am also very lucky to have a supportive partner who has been telling me to do my own thing for a while.
Can you impart a quote, or words of wisdom to inspire those starting out?
