Today, meet local maker, Hannah of Hannah Elizabeth Design who will join us at Etsy Made Local Tottenham on Saturday 7th December.

You’ll be able to find Hannah in Tottenham Town Hall on the day. Don’t forget to stop by our second venue, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre as well.

What is your link to Tottenham?

I’m still relatively new to the area after moving here in February. I’m enjoying exploring at the moment and feel very inspired by my new surroundings!

What inspired you to became a maker?

I always loved art at school and in 2007, I graduated with a degree in Illustration from Bristol. Since then, I’ve been working freelance as an illustrator as well as teaching art part time. During my Masters, I began exploring digital drawing and that’s really when I started making my prints. I’m a passionate environmentalist which is why a lot of my work involves the natural world. I try to promote drawing as a tool for communication both in my art teaching and also through my illustrations.

After a long day designing and making, what do you do to switch off and relax?

Sit outside in the garden (weather permitting!) with a cup of tea. It’s the simple things in life for me!

Can you impart a quote or words of wisdom to inspire?

Do what you love and what makes you happy. Things that are worth achieving are never going to be easy – I try to remind myself of that when I’m having a tough day!

Makers Corner: Roomamakes

We have only a few days until our Spring Makers Market this 2 & 3 March at The Beehive Pub, N17 9BQ and still so many makers to introduce! Let’s go!

Hello. Who is Roomamakes?

Roomamakes is Rooma, mum of three boys with a background in the arts, including a degree specialising in printed textiles, and who went on to work in the fashion industry for a number of years.  However, although i veered off the creative track and into production, my love of creating and making was always there.

We are intrigued to know, where do you get your inspiration from?

This was probably down to my mum who taught me how to sew,  knit and crochet at a very young age.  So once my boys were settled in school, I decided to take the plunge and do what I always loved. My mum was a machinist in the old Simpson’s factory in Hackney.  In her spare time she would make us outfits,  knit without the use of patterns and still manage to create amazing things. Her love of embroidery carried on with needlepoint in her retirement . She was very much a multi-tasker in the world of creating.

After a long day creating, what do you find to be your go-to for relaxing and switching off?

I usually relax after the boys are tucked into bed… with a few catch up episodes of the current BBC drama!

I try to switch off from everything, but there is always some thing well within reach. A notebook to doodle in acts like therapy and I fall into a little bubble of my own!

Before you go, can you impart some words of wisdom for those starting out?

Life is short and if you never try, you never know!

Hello! Who is the lady behind For Your Glory Gifts?

Hi. My name is Kelly Kellz and I am the founder and creator of For Your Glory Gifts,

What inspired you to become a maker?

I have always had a creative flair and started making personalised gifts after organising my friends Bridal shower which included making gifts for the guests. Since then, I have incorporated other elements items adding greater variety.

What is it like to manage your own business, or like many, juggle multiple jobs?

It can be challenging, but I am an entrepreneur at heart and always dreamed of having my own business so this is just the beginning. I really enjoy marketing, networking and being creative so that side of it I don’t consider ‘work’ because I enjoy it too much!

Can you tell us what is it like juggling your passion whilst holding down a day job?

It can be a little distracting as I would love to do this full time, however I motivate myself with my day job by using my hard earned money to continue investing in new ideas, new ways of adding to the gifts an taking that risk that it might or might not sell. I like to have options myself to keep the creating interesting for me also, so I hope that also keeps my customers interested too to see what’s next.

Can you impart a quote or words of wisdom to inspire?

I am a big believer in the power of our thoughts and words, so everything I do is done with a positive thought, outcome or word connected. I have to say it works and would encourage others to do the same!

Thank you very much, Kelly.

Makers Corner: Gaby Gassner

It has been a while, but we are delighted to bring you the stories behind our incredible designer-makers.

Today we bring you Gaby Gassner who is the creator and maker behind statement jewellery using various bead weaving techniques.

Gassner_wrapWhat inspired you to became a maker?

Other makers & designers and artists. And figuring out that office life wasn’t for me.

Please describe the designing and making process.

It starts with some sketchy doodles of how an idea could work, followed by playing around with various combinations and different materials. My approach is very hands-on, making small tweaks can change the overall look, constantly evaluating if something works or not and starting all over again if something doesn’t work. You know when something is finished when it feels right.

After a long day designing and making, what do you do to switch off and relax?

I like to take the odd afternoon off and hook up with friends to see an exhibition, explore a new place or just have a chin wag over a cuppa.

About Etsy Made Local

Etsy Made Local is an annual seller-led, Etsy initiative celebrating crafters, collectors and artisans from across the UK. Introductions

The Crafty North Londoner Etsy Team is organised on a voluntarily basis. The sole purpose is to provide a platform for sellers who wish to reconnect with their customers in a face-to-face setting.

At each market we have held this past year, customers have commented on the high quality items produced. Simply put, we are all amazing designer-maker crafters in our fields! For that reason, if you are not selected to trade, please do not be disheartened. Most importantly, it will not be because your products are not up to scratch, but instead,  your category is over subscribed, or because through experience, we have learnt what does/does not trade very well on market day. We do not want to accept your application fee for the sake of it.

Once again, the Crafty North Londoner Etsy Team is operated on a voluntary basis. As this is a community event, all successful applicants will be expected to participate in the promotion of the market, may it be online or offline and assist with the setup or breakdown of the market. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one!

And just in case you’re not sure where to locate the application form, apply here for Etsy Made Local Tottenham and we look forward to seeing you at our bumper handmade only Christmas Market on December 1st (Tottenham Town Hall) and 2nd (The Beehive Pub).

Markers Corner: LB BEADS

As we draw closer to our upcoming Summer Makers Market, we introduce one of our newer designer-makers, Lolonyo. Read on for more.

Who is the creator behind LB Beads?

LB Beads was founded in 2017 by me, Lolonyo Amegayibor-Bunge, and I grew up in Ghana where beads play a big role in its history, society and everyday life.

Screenshot_20180619-092359_1

Can you recall what, or who, inspired you to work with beads?

I have always been fascinated by beads and took part in a beading workshop nine years ago. In 2016 when I visited my parents in Ghana, I went to various bead markets and was so inspired by the diversity of beads, materials used and the conversations that evolved around the beads, this prompted me to start designing and creating jewellery.

Screenshot_20180619-091759_1

Can you tell us a little about the design process?

In terms of the designing process, I am inspired by the beads I have to hand, then think about the design and start stringing. Every piece of jewellery is carefully crafted and each is unique, a one off, due to the fact that most of my beads and embellishments are hand crafted by traditional methods. I use different combinations for each design and no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.

How are your pieces sustainable and environmentally friendly?

The beads I use are made from recycled glass, plastic, shells, clay, coconut shells, bone etc. Everything in Ghana has potential, For the artisan bead makers, any broken bottle, jar, container can be ground into a powder and fired into beads. Every piece of jewellery comes in a handmade African print gift bag.
