We’ll dive straight in, what inspired you to became a maker?

As ‘The Csquared’, we are mostly inspired by space, nature and mostly music in our designs. This trilogy is basically the essentials in our lives. We are two close friends both named Cansu and one of us is a natural born maker in Istanbul.

She was my tile art tutor in Turkey, and that is how our relationship started. When I started Cansu’s tile art course in Istanbul, we both didn’t know that it would take us to where we are now. It’s about the passion of the creative process and the sacred energy between us I believe.

Since I’ve moved to London, the city itself has triggered me so much to be a part of this creative world with its diversity, dynamism and also the unity of different cultures. What I feel with that is a perfect harmony without bounds.

We love to research the areas that inspire us, or what we are curious about, depending on our moods. Sometimes it can be a lyric of a song, or a phase of the moon. We put a story behind what we feel at that very moment. The outcome of this story forms the basis of our sketches and the design process. That’s how we start to put all the best that we can into our work.

What is it like owning your own business or like many, juggling multiple jobs?

This is probably the most complementary act of our lives. It takes a lot of hard work and a non-stop thinking / brainstorming process. So along as we can reflect this in our art, we feel the most energetic and alive. It’s a total blessing.

After a long day designing and making, what do you do to switch off and relax?

We’ll answer separately to this question 🙂

Cansu in Istanbul:

Since I’ve loaded with such motivation and adrenalin after the making process I prefer hanging out with my friends for a drink and socialise, either at home or outside.

Cansu in London: Taking a shower and lying down on the sofa for hours without doing anything with a cup of tea or booze.

Can you impart a quote or words of wisdom to inspire?

We as a humankind have the desire to leave a mark and share the most overborne parts of our souls in this world by nature. Use creativity as a tool to reveal these basic instincts and keep on doing whatever you are into no matter what.

Thank you so much for speaking with us. You can find the lovely Cquard on Day 1 of Etsy Made Local Tottenham (Tottenham Town Hall) along with many other talented local makers and don’t forget, this is a two-day bumper handmade only market! Find us on Day 2 at The Beehive Pub on 2 December. See you then!!
